Russian strategic bombers out on patrol

On August 17 the long-range divisions of Russia’s Air Force resumed patrolling of remote areas over the North Eastern Atlantic, the Norwegian and Northern Seas, the Sea of Japan, and the North Pole.Russia resumes long range patrols using the Tupolev Tu-95 Bear after nearly 15 years of inactivity.

The chief of the Russian Air Force information and public relations office, Colonel Alexander Drobyshevsky told Itar-Tass:”The flight of two Tu-95MS heavy bombers will be carried out with air refuelling in northern latitudes and will cover the water area of two oceans. Another pair of bombers will take off from an aerodrome in the Amur region for air patrolling of the east Atlantic area where will fulfil a number of training tasks.Several Il-78 planes from the Orlovsky detached aviation regiment of aerial tankers of long-range aviation will refuel in the air the bombers the time of flight of which will be 12.5 hours. After the flight mission accomplishment the crews of the strategic bombers will land their aircraft on the base airfield”.

Commander of Long-Range Aviation Major-General Pavel Androsov was in command of the manoeuvres that lasted until September 21.

Sorties involving Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers carrying dummy rockets, as well as Il-78 tanker planes and MiG-35 fighters are carried out in complicated conditions, with in-flight refuelling and quite often fighter-planes of NATO and other countries are present in the immediate vicinity.
